  1. Columbia wetlands outpost

Just south of Golden, Columbia Wetlands Outpost Adventures is a dreamy mix of paddling, nature-discovery- and surprise summer thrills. With calm waters perfect for canoe, kayak, pedal-boats, e-canoe, SUP rentals or guided eco-tours, you’ll meander through one of North America’s largest intact wetlands.

The Columbia wetlands are home to over 260 species of birds and countless other wildlife. It’s not uncommon to spot bald eagles soaring overhead, or turtles sunbathing on logs. The waters are calm and beginner-friendly, making it a perfect activity for families-even those with younger kids. In Autumn, they have an amazing corn maze!

The outpost offers self-guided rentals, as well as guided eco-tours where a naturalist helps you learn about the ecology of the region. They also have a fun dock area with picnic spots, nature trails, and even a “floating boardwalk” experience that’s perfect for curious little explorers.

Beyond the gentle paddle and photos with the Guinness World Records largest hand paddle (measuring over 60 feet long), families flock here for the highlight of summer- the giant slip-n-slide. Described by visitors as a “hit!”, this water-filled hill is pure joy for kids and adults. It’s the perfect splashy counterpoint to your wildlife excursion.

2. Golden Skybridge

Golden Skybridge- For views, and maybe a little heart attack

Nestled in Golden, BC, this suspension bridge is Canada’s highest. And yes, it’s high enough to make you question all your life choices as you peer down into the gorge. But the views? Totally worth the weak knees and sweaty palms. (Fun fact. I was so scared, I cried when I finally got across)

If you’re chasing family adventure (with bonus adrenaline), this place delivers. Think: zipline rides, forest trails, canyon swings, a mountain coaster, rock wall, axe throwing, and a natural playground that fills your Montessori dreams.

3. Castledale Flower farm.

Approximately 30 minutes south of Golden is this hidden gem, Castledale flower farm, run by Carla, a long time local. The farm prides itself on sustainable farming & floristry practices and chemical-free blooms.

Flower subscriptions are available, as well as farm tours and workshops!

During the farm tour, you can meet her friendly farm pups, learn about how the flowers are grown and harvested, and build your very own bouquet from the flower bar! Please check the website for availability.

Things book up fast so make sure to save your spot with a reservation.

4. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

Where you can (safely) visit a grizzly named Boo.

If your summer plans include mountain views, a bit of adrenaline, and meeting a literal grizzly bear, you’re going to want to swing by Kicking Horse Mountain Resort right here in Golden, BC.

Yes, there’s epic mountain biking. Yes, the alpine air will make you question your life in the city. But the real star here? Boo—the resort’s very own resident grizzly bear, living his best life in a spacious, protected refuge.

While the gondola’s currently snoozing for summer (maintenance break!), you can still take the Catamount chairlift up to visit Boo. It's a scenic ride that’s low on effort, high on wow-factor, and perfect for families—no hiking boots required. Once you’re up there, you’ll get a guided walk to learn all about Boo’s story (he was orphaned as a cub), his bear-y big personality, and why he’s basically the mountain’s unofficial mayor.

Add in some lift-accessed biking, wildflowers, and mountain picnics, and you’ve got the makings of an unforgettable day.

Pro tip: Boo’s most photogenic at golden hour. But then again, so are you.

Note that the mosquitos can get pretty intense. I recommend long pants and shirts, and some heavy-duty bug spray.

5. Explore Golden downtown

Downtown Golden, BC is a quirky little gem—compact, walkable, and bursting with charm. Start off in the Spirit Square, where fountains bubble, wildflowers bloom, and kids splash around gleefully. In summer, it turns into a buzzing farmers market (Wednesdays, mid-June to late-Sept)—stacked with fresh produce, local crafts, and even a kids’ activity corner.

Stroll through town to catch vibrant public art murals, then sneak into Four Points books—a cozy two-story hideaway of books, local art, and tasty lunch fare at Bacchus Cafe.

A short wander off Main brings you to the Golden Museum & Archives, where Indigenous heritage, railway lore, and pioneer tales come alive. Likewise, the Art Gallery of Golden–Kicking Horse Culture surprises with local pottery, paintings, jewelry, and other treasures.

By afternoon, swing into Whitetooth Brewing Co. for a cold one—yes, kids are welcome until around 4 pm, and while the brewery doesn’t cook, families can bring snacks or order in. So parents enjoy a pint while little ones munch happily beside. If your kids (or yourselves) insist on Ice cream at the end of a hot day, I can’t recommend Big Cones enough. Just on the strip between DQ and Tim Hortons, is a sweet little pop-up ice cream shop with the best ice cream in town. Bring cash as card payment isn’t available.

And now, just above town, is the newly renovated Edelweiss Village—a cluster of six 110‑year‑old Swiss‑style chalets lovingly restored by Montayne Capital. Think historic charm, modern comforts, and alpine vibes lifted from the Alps. Guests can stay in them, wander the scenic site, and learn about Golden’s mountain‑guide roots.
